If wisdom teeth do not emerge properly, the results may include significant discomfort, inflammation, misalignment, or crowding. We understand there are many concerns regarding this procedure, Dr. Votteler at First Choice Dental wants you to feel comfortable with the treatment you are receiving. The following are answers to the most commonly asked questions about wisdom teeth removal aftercare to help our patients be well-prepared.
What should I know to be prepared immediately following treatment?
Depending on the form of sedation used, you may need assistance getting back home once the procedure is complete. A dedicated assistant will escort you to a friend or family member who can drive you home and take care of you until the effects of the sedation wear off. Even when the form of sedation used does not impair your ability to drive, we still recommend having a trusted person take you to and from surgery. Once at home, we advised you to have someone close by for at least two hours following the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.
Is bleeding following surgery normal?
Immediately after the procedure, our dentist will recommend checking your gauze every 30 minutes until the bleeding subsides. For the next two days, it is not uncommon for the extraction site to display light bleeding. When this occurs, firmly put pressure on the extraction site using gauze. Do so until a clot has formed in the treatment site.
Are there any dietary restrictions?
For the 24 hours following your wisdom tooth extraction, your diet should consist strictly of soft foods to avoid irritating the surgical site. You should stay hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of water, but avoid using straws. Smoking not only slows the healing process, it also increases the chances of disrupting the blood clot.
When can I resume my normal daily oral hygiene routine?
After a full day has passed, you may brush and rinse your teeth carefully, always being mindful of the surgical site. The mouth rinse provided by our office should be used twice a day to maintain a hygienic oral environment. While other over-the-counter products are allowed, be sure to use alcohol-free solutions only.
What should I watch out for?
Common symptoms after a wisdom tooth extraction are numbness, sore throat, a slight fever, or dizziness. If you are experiencing fever-like symptoms three-to-five days following your procedure, contact our practice immediately, as this could be a sign of infection.
